Day One Hundred and Eleven. Come on. Do days get any better? Recording Lachlan West for Daniel James’s EP, working at the brand new Studio 301 (Studio 2), working with my man Tim Watt. .
Who do I thank? Without ego, I thank myself for working mighty hard and being positive. No slowing down now.
To the left is a vintage RCA 77B microphone. The 77-B was much smaller than previous RCA designs thanks to the improvements made in the magnetic materials used for the large permanent magnets required by all ribbon microphone designs. To the Right is an RCA 77 DX, which has a bigger physical profile than the 77 B (which is smaller in size). Here is where it gets interesting: depending on the condition of each microphone and the condition of the ribbon, this will have a much bigger difference in the sound than the actual differences between a 77 B and a 77 DX. And just like any microphone comparison, you need to take into context what the sound source will sound like in front of each mic. I do three basic tests in order to determine the basic character of sound of a mic: A polarity test (to check absolute polarity), A key test (to check the transient response) and a voice text (Reading the same text on all mics being compared). All these tests will yield the basic differences in both tonality and frequency response of a mic. Using a neutral mic preamp that has enough clean gain to truly evaluate each mic without sonic interferance will further expose each microphone. Compare, evaluate and discern the differences, integral ingredients for an awe inspiring end result. Special thanks to my good friend @rafasardina for bringing these jewels to the studio. #watersoundstudio#carloscastro#rca77b#rca77dx#vintagemicrophone#ribbonmicrophone#rcamicrophone#recordingengineer#recordingstudio#musicengineer#musicproducer#mixengineer#recordingexpert#mixingexpert#gearslutz#gearporn#countrymusic#rockmusic#indierock#edm#edmmusic#jazzmusic#acousticmusic#bluegrassmusic
Each Sunday for about 3 years now, Ive had the pleasure of working with 87 year old George Jonescu during his Big Band Sunday Night radio program. Tonight George surprised me with this gift, a #RCA77DX ribbon microphone. It’s busted and I’m spoiled. Toronto can catch his show 7p-11p on AM740
