🇬🇧️ ...Their faces, rough and tired, bore witness of the hardships of their everyday life. Their bodies were so muscular, that they’d stir the envy of all Western fitness freaks that spend hours on end in urban gyms. They claimed a tip for the porter services they offered and, whenever someone else barged in and got it out of their hands, they shouted angrily and raced to the next piece of luggage. In the battle for survival there was no room for smiling... The horizon was filled with Zebra laughter. Distant calls spoke back & forth telling others the path was clear of danger.
In between calls, splashing water & turning rocks added a backing track to the tune of the day. This was Okaukeujo at its best.
The sun gave off a harsh light but it did not ruin a thing, Black & white was all I saw. No golden light was needed here, the gathered dazzle of zebras made sure of that. They were the star of this show.
Being colour blind would not have been a disadvantage, the landscape and zebras had been rid of all its hues. Etosha was bare at the best of times, but this monochrome scene was far from that, the landscape had motion.
Hundreds of zebras drank before me, this was a scene I had seen before but one that always has me returning, everywhere you looked there was something to be seen & savoured. Zebras really are amazing & fascinating creatures.
Like a fire I was drawn to the life that was unfolding before me.
Heads would go down for long periods at a time before briefly appearing again. A cackle here, a scuttle there, but overall a relaxed scene played out before me. The scene was black & white. The absence of colour made me study the Zebras features closer & appreciate their sheer numbers.
No matter how long I stared, I could not drink in enough of this, these lines had mesmerised me. The distant Zebra calls was all I heard. Everything was at peace.
Under a tree a lone jackal rose. He stretched & considered if it was worth while to step out into the sun. He had obviously just risen from a mid morning slumber. A slow yawn followed, then he stepped forward.
As soon as the sun caressed his tawny head a zebra took notice, there was no call just a sudden shift in position.
The startling jolt sent shock waves through the drinking dazzle & the serene scene broke into chaos.
Water rose as hooves were set in motion & the landscape came alive. Each Zebra bolted to what they though was safety, little did they know there was nothing to run from.
As the marauding pack looked around at what had set off the chain reaction, all they could see was a lone jackal bobbing towards the now murky waters edge.
