This summer, we’re taking a look back at some of the amazing authors we’ve been lucky to host at the Texas Book Festival by recommending their books as summer reading.
Check out this week's recommendation from Lydia:
"I drive past this gorgeous new mural at 12th and Chicon almost every day, and it always makes me think of Daniel José Older's SHADOWSHAPER books. I love imagining Sierra and the other Shadowshapers interacting with the magic and history in this beautiful, important work of art."
In the early 20th century, East Austin was home to the Austin Black Senators, the winning team that played at historic Downs Field at 12th Street and Alexander Avenue. The field was recently revitalized, and the legacy of the Austin Black Senators revived, as part of an effort by community members and @sixsquareatx to reanimate the culture and history of East Austin - a history that includes its baseball team. Famed black players Satchel Paige, 'Smokey Joe' Williams, Willie Mays, and the Austin Black Senators' own Willie Wells are known to have played at Downs. As a hall-of-famer shortstop Wells would go on to train Jackie Robinson, though he himself would never join the major leagues because of the color of his skin.
This year, Color Squad has been engaging with the history of the East Austin community in service of a mural that will be unveiled on Memorial Day, May 28 from 5 to 7 pm at Lott Pocket Park, another site of cultural importance in the area. #PortraitsofEastAustin
This month, the Ladies welcomed a few new faces to the team and hit the streets with @tipstertours! 🎨☀️🍻 They enjoyed a beautiful, sunny afternoon checking out the art around East Austin, with a pit stop for some ice cream at @prohibitioncreamery 🍨 (PS: If you haven't taken a Tipster Tour yet, we highly recommend!) Stay tuned to see what the ladies are up to next month, and check out our story highlights for more shots on the tour 🖼
