Day 13: CARDIOOOOOO
Let's talk fasted cardio. I have seen it work for clients, and I have seen it completely backfire. I used to be "Team Suck It Up", but time and experience (as well as many well researched studies) have shown otherwise. The vast majority of research shows that there is no difference between fasted or fed state cardio.
Furthermore, if you are losing sleep in order to fit in your fasted cardio, you could potentially be doing more harm than good. As I have gone over before, SLEEP is by far one of the most important factors in body composition. A lack of sleep disrupts both stress and hunger hormones, as well as largely affects your energy levels and mood throughout the day (and let's face it, when we are tired, we are far more likely to pull back on effort in workouts and/or grab for a quick "pick me up" as a snack).
Lastly, touching upon cardio in general--clients as me all of the time "when and what type". The answer that I will most likely give them, is "whatever doesn't stress you out". This is such a vague answer, but I truly do believe that the answer always boils down to whatever someone is most likely to stick with. Sure, cardio often sucks (for some... not all). I am sure a lot of us would like to avoid it at all costs. But even from just a cardiovascular standpoint, it is important.
NEAT (non exercise activity thermogenesis), steady state, HIIT--all viable options, and all have different benefits. HIIT Sprints will kick your ass, will help with nutrient partitioning, will keep your metabolism revved, and are quick to bust out. Steady state is generally for a longer duration than HIIT sprints, but is also more relaxing and can de-stress you mind, body, and soul. Another great thing about steady state, is you can easily watch a TV show or movie zone out so the time flies by. NEAT--such as taking a stroll, is also very relaxing and therapeutic.
So next time you're having anxiety just thinking about getting your ass out of bed at 3am to do your cardio, remind yourself that there are other forms... and other times of the day to do your cardio that is equally as beneficial.
