« We’re going to have to bleach you » SHE said. I was 16 at the time and it seemed something about my complexion bothered her. It bothered her so much she wanted to help me, save me, improve my odds at life- or whatever it was she felt was most important. Being one of the darker people in my family the jokes got tiring pretty fast. My dear mum, she was great- she always said I was beautiful, it’s crazy how little value I placed on her words at the time. Maybe cos parents are supposed to say such things. I don’t recall how long I applied the cream, but it couldn’t have been more than a couple of weeks, between an allergic reaction and my mum finding out- the whole thing came to a stop. For those that don’t get social media and think it’s filled with vain people taking selfies- I want to say that when magazines, TV etc wouldn’t showcase the diverse shades & sizes of beauty, we made ourselves seen, we broadcast our own images, we created our own platforms. It’s never been about being better than the other- it’s simply about Being. #FortheKellys#blackgirlmagic#melanin
Why visit Thailand during low season? Because you’ll get beaches like this all to yourself!
Tonsai was like a ghost town when we visited. Every shop was closed, yet there were miscellaneous items scattered on all the shelves, as if the owners hastily picked up and left for vacation. It was just us, the empty storefronts and the jungle. It felt like we were walking through a scene of Jurassic Park! 😲
