So you want to get jacked like John Cena? Follow the 5 principles below to start packing on muscle!
You need extra calories to ensure your body has the resources to build muscle. Aim to consume 200-300 calories over your maintenance and look to gain 1-2 pounds per month. This will keep you packing on muscle without all that extra fat.
You need enough protein to recover between workouts and to make gains. Get at least .7-1g/lb of body weight each day of protein. 1g per pound is sometimes an easier target to shoot for, and there really is no downside of getting extra protein.
In order to build muscle and add size you need to be PROGRESSIVELY OVERLOADING your lifts. A simple way is to aim to hit weekly PR's. This means your adding weight to the bar and reps to your key exercises. This forces your muscles to continuously adapt and grow as you continue to challenge them.
If you want to build as much MUSCLE as possible you want to train the main compound movements, like squat, deadlift, bench, rows, overhead press, and pull ups. These compound movements stimulate way more muscle fibers than isolation movements like a bicep curl. These compounds will build more muscle and you can add in those isolation movements to get more overall volume.
