Gion matsuri is one of Japan’s largest festivals and originates from a religious ceremony that took place in 869 to appease the gods in order to stem a plague epidemic. It was repeated whenever an epidemic arose and has been an annual event since 970. The sacred child chosen for this festival is a local boy aged 8-10 years old and is not allowed to touch the ground from July 13th to July 17th.
