I know I mentioned this already three pictures ago, but sometimes, while we were in Rio Dulce in Guatemala, the water seemed impossible blue.
That afternoon we went to visit Castillo San Felipe is a great example. It was blazing hot, we had just walked for an hour, my feet hurt and I was incredibly thirsty.
And then we climbed up to the lookout tower and got this view. And suddenly I knew that it was totally worth it.
A tale of two birds. Aka long post ahead.
When people find out I’m traveling in #Colombia, they almost certainly have at least one of two reactions: 1. Is it safe? Or 2. Oooh! Narcos! (The tv show). Well the answer to point 1 is that it is as safe as it gets in almost any big city in the world - as long as you’re streetwise about it. And to point 2, my immediate response is that I’ve not watched a single episode of the #Netflix series because I’m not interested in glorifying drug violence.
Right this moment, I am in #Medellin, which pop culture junkies probably recognize as the home base of he-who-shall-not-be-named aka the infamous criminal. The city’s reality is that it has, over the past 20-ish years, transformed itself from ground zero of drug wars into a hugely livable, innovative and yes, safe city. The people are extremely friendly (actually it seems like all Colombians are amazingly friendly) and even more striking, super proud of Medellín. What the locals do not like however, is speaking about Voldemort in a way that glamorizes what he has done - this includes homicides, bombings and in general, terrorizing the population by inflicting extreme violence. So no, I did not go around looking for the buildings that Escobar lived in or check out his grave. That is crass and insensitive.
Instead I visited the gorgeous public spaces (with priceless Botero sculptures free for all to interact with), hung out at cool cafes drinking Colombian coffee and enjoyed their spotlessly clean Metro system which many credit as being pivotal in turning the city around. All of this happened in spite of the tremendous suffering the people have gone through in modern history.
And now back to these two bird sculptures. The one on the left is the bombed out shell of the first Botero sculpture. The bombing happened in 1995 during a concert and killed about 20 people. In the aftermath, Botero, who is certainly deserving of the title of Medellín’s most famous son, called the mayor of the city to tell him not to clear out the ruined sculpture but to leave it as a memorial. (Post continues in comment below.)
ECUADOR - QUITO
If you never considered Quito, the capital of Ecuador, to be an exciting place to explore, please do read my new blog (LINK IN BIO!) 🌎🌍🌏 historic city centre protected by UNESCO, natural gems of Andes, selfie with a llama, equator, avocado and rose plantations... sounds good, isn’t it?
Lake Titicaca which borders Bolivia and Peru is the largest lake in South America. It also sits at 3813m elevation which is crazy. And yea I didn’t just make up the lake’s name 😆
