TODAY IS MARKED THE 15TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF "THE QUEEN OF LATIN MUSIC" CELIA CRUZ.
The Miami newspaper “El Nuevo Herald” remembers Celia having marked the 15th anniversary of her death.
On July 16 marks a new anniversary, the number 15, of the death of the undisputed 'Reina de la Salsa', Celia Cruz. Her legacy is so immense that it seems she never left us. Her image is everywhere, and her music seems to be in the environment steadily. The Guarachera of Cuba and the world really achieved immortality.
During a presentation in Mexico in 2001, she suffers a health accident. As a result, she is found to have cancer in the brain (a glioma, a very aggressive brain tumor), undergo an operation to remove it at the end of that year, and then try to resume her artistic career.
In 2002, and despite her illness (since the tumor had grown again), she appeared at the Latin Grammy Awards, where she won 5 GRAMMYS, and participated in the musical singing for the first time live "La negra tiene tumbao ".
In March 2003, her last year of life, she was offered a tribute by the US Hispanic network Telemundo, which involved various figures of the musical environment and many friends of Celia.
In the afternoon of July 16, 2003, she died at her home in Fort Lee, New Jersey, at the age of 78. At the express wish of her, her remains were first transferred to Miami for two days to receive the homage of Her admirers of Cuban exile, returning and finally resting in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx (New York).
