No "Brand" Saturday. New head gear for the weekend from Sicilian capmaker La Coppola Storta, or in English A Cap Askew. Very interesting story behind this make from near Palermo, from its all female work force, to its insistence on all natural fibre material, to it's social mission of "reclaiming" the flat cap or coppola from its Mafia associations. Pairing it with my beloved watch from the Dutch horological wunderkind watchmakers Gronefeld Brothers, another niche "craftmen". The Remontoire and Coppola in harmonious shades of blue for a rainy day.
La brillantezza dell’acciaio e il nero delle tre lunette creano un contrasto perfetto, a cui si aggiunge il minuzioso lavoro di cesellatura sull’acciaio della cassa. Un orologio bellissimo firmato Citizen.

I bought this superb Rolex Oysterquartz in 2012, planning to give it to my as-yet unconceived child. A year later we got pregnant after multiple rounds of IVF. We soon found out that we had identical twin boys on the way, which was super news, but left me with the problem of which boy to give it to
Fast forward to the 28th of the standard 40 weeks of pregancy. I was wearing the watch when I got a call from the hospital saying that my wife had been taken in for a super-premature birth due to complications, and devastatingly, one of the twins didn't make it. Due to the traumatic birth, the other survived but suffered brain damage that caused cerebral palsy. What was supposed to be the best day of my life turned out to be not so good
Well, that solved the problem of which boy to give the watch to. The surviving twin is an absolute joy, and the watch is his birthright. It was with me throughout the whole ordeal, and I hope he will keep it with him through hard times too
Of course, I have mixed feelings whenever I wear it. I enjoy it as a celebration of his birth, but it's also a reminder of what we lost. It's a complicated piece

Now here’s one that you don’t see everyday, an Omega Seamaster DeLuxe ref GX6565 with a cal 500 movement circa 1956. The 14K yellow gold case was made by Jonell in Canada, very crisp!

Early morning breakfast endeavours with Tudor BBBBB...stands for mouthful Black Bay Bronze Blue Bucherer. Teochew kuehs are basically rice flour dough stuffed with Chinese chives and parsnips, even glutinous rice, a favoured snack amongst my Chinese dialect group.
