Portraits and Movie quotes no. 3 .
"The man I worked for, he had one of the biggest companies in New York City- he ran it for more than fifty years. Fifteen years, eight months, nine days- I was with him every day. I looked after him, took care of him, protected him... I learned from him. Bumpy was rich, but he wasn't white man rich, you see he wasn't wealthy. He didn't own his own company. He thought he did, but he didn't. He just managed it. White man owned it so they owned him. Nobody owns me, though. Because I own my company. And my company sells a product that's better than the competition at a price that's lower than the competition" - Frank Lucas .

I left my airbnb in New Orleans at 6am, drive round the corner and see this scrawny looking lady feeding grits to some chickens. I pull over and say hi. Her name is Bessie and she’s a little worse for wear as she’s been out dancing all night and is nursing a mild hangover. She’s 82, or so she tells me, though she doesn’t look it.
She allows me to snap away. She invites me into her house, it’s messy, ashtrays strewn everywhere, it’s unkempt and poor. She tells me about her family, i get the feeling she has fallen on hard times. I’m not sure if she was or still is a crack addict or a prostitute, but there is something about her that is special, she has that zing, that sparkle in her eyes. I loved photographing her. She made my day and i hope i made hers as well. Can’t wait to print this and send it to her, better still i’d love to return to NOLA and deliver it to her in person and maybe spend more time with her and take some more stills of her life. One day.
