To get from from the Madelina Islands in north Sardinia to the wonderful French island of Corsica is only a 14NM and a 2.5 hr sail. Like the Cook Straight in New Zealand it’s a bit temperamental with gusty winds and current. Not feeling too adventurous we chose a fairly mundane time to cross with low winds of about 5kts - 10kts.
Finally saw a small pod of dolphins feeding and clearly not interested in playing with our boat. But we saw dolphins! We passed magnificent coastal rock cliff formations, which upon closer inspection had an entire village of narrow three story high old stone buildings perched precariously on top. Dubbed the ‘City of Cliffs’ with ones closer to the center looking as if they were about to collapse into the ocean below!
The massive cliffs hide the very sheltered Port of Bonifacio, which has a pretty impressive medieval citadel with massive old stone walls.
An entrance only visible through the cliffs by a red lighthouse and the fact we saw a ton of boats coming out to play. Space is pretty tight in the port and taken up with an array of mega super-yachts of every description. We opted to stay in a narrow self-mooring natural Cala for a third of the price (€50 for catamarans, €25 for monohulls) of the marina though and ironically met another catamaran called Wanderlust (what are the odds!?) who came to help us with our lazy lines.
A tricky mooring situation at the best of times but we also had some wind and discovered a few unmaintained lines which didn’t actually secure onto anything. Surrounded by high cliffs and the citadel at the opening, the views were still pretty spectacular and only a 5 minute dingy ride to the marina, so the near two hour mooring experience was quickly forgotten.
The port area very lively with restaurants and bars we headed straight up the many stairs (happy to get some exercise) to the citadel and spent the day and evening meandering cute cobblestone streets full of history and secrets. It was a pretty magic day! 😍🌎☀️⛵️
Is it the weekend yet? Just kidding (sort of) 😜 It’s all good - Mondays are awesome. Embrace this fresh start to reset your perspective. Let the sun shine on your face as a reminder that it is a gift to be alive and that you are indeed free, strong, and loved. Soak up some gratitude, and it’ll be smooth sailing from here on out.
