All across North America during the month of May, Waldorf schools gather fifth graders for the annual Pentathlon. A Pentathlon is an event that comprises five athletic components: the long jump; the javelin throw; the discus throw; wrestling; and a relay race. The Fifth Grade trains all year for this spring event, while, in the classroom, their teacher leads them through the mythology and history of Ancient Greece. What a great way to experience their curriculum! 🌟🙏🌟

Another splendid day typing letters to Santa at the #SanderlingWaldorf School's Winter Faire. This sweet kid brought a rough draft! You're getting everything on your list, Rhys. I just know it. 🙏🏼JC

Happy Santa Lucia Day, Instafriends! May your holiday season be filled with peace, love and LIGHT! ✨🕯✨❤️🎄 Here is a clip from last year’s Santa Lucia procession at @sanderlingwaldorf when Jeffrey bean was in grade 2. Gaaah. This song always makes me cry 😭❤️🙏🏼✨

Deep Mid-Winter drawing near,
Darkness in our Garden here – –
One small flame yet bravely burns
To show a path which ever turns.
Earth, please bear us as we go,
Seeking Light to send a-glow:
Branches green and moss and fern,
Mark our path to trace each turn.
Brother animals, teach us too
To serve with patience as you do.
We walk with candle toward the Light
While Earth awaits with hope so bright:
In the Light which finds new birth
Love may spread o’er all the Earth.
Deep Mid-Winter drawing near – –
May Light arise in our Garden here. —-Poem by Nancy Foster ✨🌲🍎🕯✨ Earlier this morning I watched Chloe’s first grade class walk their Winter Spiral, a beloved Waldorf school tradition that takes place as we approach the darkest time of year.
The Eurythmy room was transformed with a double spiral made from evergreen boughs and interspersed with golden stars, crimson poinsettias, gleaming shells and crystals.
The children quietly enter the darkened room, a single candle burning in the center of the spiral and the sweet song of a lyre playing softly in the background. One at a time the children are invited to enter the spiral, unlit apple candle in hand, where they walk silently and reverently toward the center, going inward into the stillness where the light is. They light their candles, their angelic little faces aglow, and place them along the evergreen spiral as they exit, illuminating the path for their friends who will follow them.
By the end of the walk the darkness of the room is dispelled by soft, golden light and the children leave in quiet confidence, carrying their rekindled lights inside of them out into the dark and chaotic world.
The symbolism of this deeply moving tradition isn’t explained to the children, and it doesn’t need to be because the experience of it lives inside of them in a way that words are too clumsy to express anyway. ❤️ Winter spiral is beautiful and touching and I never leave there with dry eyes. ✨🕯✨

The Angel Room at our Winter Wonderland Faire is so dreamy! ✨👼🏻✨ Kids enter with tokens and are able to go shopping for beautiful hand crafted items. And there’s a beautiful angel inside. 😍 (She’s not pictured. I snapped this during set up this morning.)

St Nicholas paid a visit to @sanderlingwaldorf today. 😊❤️ Jeffrey bean said St Nicholas was in the star meadow when he met with the Mother of Creation. The Mother of Creation told him that there would be a child born on the Earth this year, but before the child was born she would need to make a garment for the child. St Nicholas came down from the heavens to collect love to make the garment, so he came to the kids’ classes since there is a lot of love there. ❤️ St Nicholas told Chloe that she had wings inside of her. She was thrilled because she has always had an affinity for angels and fairies. ✨ It was so magical for both kids, but Chloe especially. 👼🏻 And of course he and his assistant brought them baby apples, clementines, nuts and golden stars. 🌟 Chloe is sitting at the kitchen table writing him a letter now. 😌 Happy St Nicholas Day! ✨👞🥜🍎🍊🌰✨

The kids and I love this sweet poem in The Waldorf Book of Poetry by Sarojini Naidu. It’s called “Cradle Song.” .
From groves of spice,
O’er fields of rice,
Athwart the lotus-stream,
I bring for you,
Aglint with dew,
A little lovely dream.
Sweet, shut your eyes,
The wild fireflies
Dance through the fairy neem; From the poppybole For you I stole
A little lovely dream.
Dear eyes, good night,
In golden light
The stars around you gleam; On you I press With soft caress
A little lovely dream. 🌿..:..🌿..:..🌿 .
Also, aren’t these sleeping gnomie babies adorable? We’ll have these and more at the Winter Wonderland Faire at @sanderlingwaldorf this Sunday. ☺️❤️

This is the 3rd grade garden, where grades 1-8 gathered to say their class blessings before we all enjoyed pie together. Jeffrey bean couldn’t wait to be a 3rd grader for this very reason. A lot of love and hard work has gone into this garden. ❤️

We just got home from Chloe’s lantern walk for Martinmas, another beautiful Waldorf school tradition celebrating the light within. Her 1st grade teacher wrote “From France comes the legend of St. Martin, who, as a young man, passed under an archway in the city of Amiens and discovered a poor beggar huddled there. The man was nearly naked, shivering with cold, and had received no alms to assist him. On seeing him, the young Martin took his own cape from his shoulders, tore the garment in half and covered the poor man to warm him. The following night Martin had a dream in which he saw Christ wearing the same piece of his cape. The experience confirmed in him his devotion to all humankind regardless of their station in life.
This time of year, we are invited to enter into the Martinmas season both as the beggar and the giver. As we near the darkest time of year, we have an opportunity to see the parts of ourselves that are in need of healing and comforting, and we experience the light of our own higher selves as we meet those in need. We celebrate this symbolically by carrying lanterns out into the darkness of night and bringing the joy of our songs and light into the darkness of sky and soul.” ✨🕯✨

It’s WOW day at school! The kiddos get to dress up in curriculum related costumes every Halloween for a small donation benefiting the Lakota Waldorf School in South Dakota. Chloe is a fairytale princess and Bean is a farmer. ❤️
A time honored tradition at Sanderling is the Mother's Day Tea. Mom's are invited to spend an hour in the class getting waited on, fed and pampered by their child. Many get necks massaged and serenaded with flutes, but all get treated to some extra love ❤️ and appreciation. And the service gets better as they move closer to 8th grade. #sanderlingwaldorf
8th grade projects were presented yesterday and those kids really blew us away! The year-long projects included interesting topics such as; becoming a Chocolatier, fundraising, Equine Therapy, Photojournalism, Human Trafficking, making a guitar and becoming a yoga teacher. They seemed more like Senior projects!! #sanderlingwaldorf

Every May Fair I have ever seen at Waldorf is always perfect. You would never know how much work the May Pole "dance" is until you see a practice! #sanderlingwaldorf
Travel season has started for many of the grades! This weekend, the 4th grade class went on the Star Of India for their overnight adventure. Not much sleep happened, but have you ever seen a well rested pirate? #sanderlingwaldorf@embryrucker
One of my mama friends sent me this picture of Jeffrey's class celebrating Chinese New Year this morning. Wish I had been there! Jeffrey retold me the story he heard on our drive to piano today. Photo cred: @arymal
