In #BusinessMirror’s #Sports:
Sacred trees line downhill route
A well-balanced course on unfamiliar terrain—it’s now the norm to decide Olympic gold in a marquee event with a tradition of surprise winners. At the 2014 Sochi Olympics, the Rosa Khutor downhill was also created for the games with a single World Cup dress rehearsal. Then, Matthias Mayer of Austria added to the list of men, including American skier Tommy Moe in 1994, whose first career victory made them Olympic downhill champion.
I am extremly happy for our 4th Ski4freedom / #NationalYouthSki camp held from 17th Jan 21th Jan 2018. There were 22 adolescents participated,12girls and 10boys in total. I am so proud of my team for conducting the camp despite our foreign friends couldn't come this season. I appreciate my team, staff for their great work, its very important for Govt. to work at grass route level and provide youth apportunity to learn. There should be public ski resorts, its very unfortunate that in 70years no women from Pakistan participated in winter Olympics! & at two occasions only one representation of men, I hope ski federation of Pakistan and Govt seriously work on winter sports and give proper ground for youth so they could nourish and represent Pakistan! I and @SaminaBaig will work within our capacity for youth and encourage boys and girls to embark on such ignored sports.
I'm from the #SwissAlps. Maybe you're now thinking hip resorts and great skiing. But keep in mind, the #Alps have not always been that way. Actually, the natural state of the Alps for centuries has been poverty. Actually, still today, most places in the Alps are still small and not hip resorts. I grew up in one of these villages. And when I say #village, I mean small. We had 160 residents. So I spent my first 6 years in school with the kids from the next two villages. We were a class of three. Me included.
However, given this history of poverty in the Alps and the small size of my village, I grew up with incredible #privileges. I got to visit a school with kids from all over the world. I got to learn 6 languages. I traveled all continents by the time I was in my #twenties. And even though I'm far from Bill Gates, in a #globalperspective, I'm rather rich. And you must know, for somebody coming from a small village in the Alps, I'm pretty average. How was this possible?
It was possible because one valley over, there was #economic#development. There was #tourism. And it was based on the vision of some few people, more than a century ago. My children’s grand-grand-grand-grand-grandfather was one of these visionaries.
The vision was one of tourism and #fivestarhotels. This might sound pretty average now, but keep in mind, the founders of this movement had that vision before they had running water in their houses, before they had electricity, before there were tourists. #Generations after that contributed their part to the development in the Alps. With lifts, #wintertourism, #skitourism and so on.
So for us, #developing#mountainbiking is not only about the next #trail or about the next step in the progression of the sport. Mountain biking is our chance to #create something for #future generations. That’s why #Allegra develops mountain biking #destinations. And will continue to do so in #2018.
